BLACK FOREST DUMP CAKE — All you need are a few simple ingredients–like a chocolate cake mix and some cherry pie filling–to make this easy decadent chocolate cherry dessert.
Sometimes, I crave a rich, chocolate dessert, but I just don’t have the energy to do anything time-consuming or fancy. Enter the Black Forest Dump Cake.
Talk about a delicious, no-effort dessert. This cake is so easy, I had my boys put it together while I made dinner. That’s the beauty of the dump cake.
It really is as simple as dumping a few ingredients into a pan. I popped this cake in the oven when we sat down to eat and an hour later, dessert was served.
Although the chocolate chips are optional in this recipe, I think the vanilla ice cream is an absolute must. And honestly, who is going to say no to more chocolate?
Now I always keep the ingredients for this recipe on hand so I can make it for last minute company, or whenever a dessert craving strikes!

I do a lot of baking and bring the items into work. Because we have to eat it on the go, typically, dump cakes are a little too “runny/gooey” on the bottom. Has anyone ever tried this recipe, but mix a little of the cake mix into the cherry filling, prior to putting the filling into the bottom of the pan? My guess is it would firm up the filling some, without affecting taste, but what do I know. Comments??

I like your idea of adding some cake mix to the pie filling. I never would have thought of that. Thank you for sharing your thought on this recipe.

After done and cooled add layer of cool whip and refrigerate till ready to serve. So you have cherry filling, cake, and cool whip topping. Instead of a solid cake you can break it in smaller pieces. On top of whip cream you can add some shaved chocolate or some score candy pieces on top.

This was such a delicious dessert! It was fudgy with a surprise crunchy ribbon. I used the chocolate chips but did not have ice cream so I served it without and it was still so good! Thank you for a great, quick and easy dessert recipe to add to my repertoire.

I suspected this cake was doomed when I added the unprepared, packaged cake mix. I was right. It was too sweet from the cake mix and it felt like something (substance, maybe?) was missing. A huge disappointment.

Yes, it is sweet and rich, but we had it at a quilting workshop, and then I made it for a Quilting Getting ready for Christmas workshop this weekend and everyone loved it. The recipe I got from the one that made it for the first workshop added one bottle of hot fudge sauce over the cake mix, after the butter was drizzled on. I am sure the ice cream would lesson the sweetness and richness, but every now and then, something like this hits the spot! I would say you are one of a few that does not like something like this!

My mom used to make a peach dump cake with canned peaches and yellow cake mix. I never thought before to switch up the flavors, but Black Forest is one of my FAVorites. One tip for the butter, I have always sliced it into thin pieces and spread them out as evenly as possible on the dry cake mix. I don’t usually get many dry patches that way. Although she’s right, any dry spots are not a problem once scooped up and topped with ice cream. And you MUST have ice cream with this kind of dessert! (I think I might even try chocolate ice cream…)

Thanks Dorinda. Chocolate ice cream sounds like a great idea!

would this work with sugar free cake mix and pie filling?
Danelle
I can’t see why not Cathy.

I made this today with sugar free devil food cake mix and sugar free cherry pie filling. I added pecans on top instead of the chocolate chips and skipped the ice cream. It was amazing! ❤️
Anne
Um cake? And chocolate? And ice cream? Heck yes!!!
Ellie from Canada
Step 2 is confusing, should the cake mix be sprinkled on top of the cherries? Looks yummy and easy!
