Why You’ll Love this Chick-Fil-A Sauce Recipe
I love Chick-fil-A sauce! I’d buy it by the gallon if I could. But instead I’ve started making Copycat Chick-fil-A Sauce at home.

I always ask for extra sauce when I eat at Chick-fil-A. My family laughs at me because I always have a bunch of those little sauce packets in the refrigerator. And sometimes I even have a few in my purse. A girl’s got to be prepared, right?
As much as I like Chick-fil-A–and their signature sauce–my youngest loves them even more. I’m pretty sure he’d eat there every day if I’d let him.
But since that’s not really an option, he was more than happy to help me come up with a copycat recipe for their famous sauce that we could whip up at home.
The best part is, this simple sauce takes just a few minutes to make, and uses common pantry ingredients you probably already have on hand. So there’s no reason not to give this recipe a try!
We love this sauce for dipping chicken (of course) and French fries. But it also makes a great spread for sandwiches (especially ham and cheese) and hamburgers.
It’s even good on pork chops, and with potato chips. Honestly, I’d be happy dipping almost anything in Chick-fil-A sauce. So until they start selling it in bulk, I’m going to keep making it at home.
Just keep this in an airtight container in the refrigerator, and it should stay good for a week or more.
My family is pretty happy I’ve figured out how to make Chick-Fil-A sauce at home. Now I’m not the weird mom who carries around a bunch little sauce packets. Although I think it’s a perfectly normal thing to do!
What Should I Serve With Homemade Chic-Fil-A Sauce?
Personally I would eat this stuff with a spoon. But a more reasonable use might be as a dip for chicken and fries.
Here are some of my favorite things to dip in this sauce.
Ingredients
- Mayonnaise – This give the sauce a rich and smooth texture. It also helps bind all the other ingredients together. Either light or low-fat work great.
- Honey – This adds some sweetness to balance out the tanginess from the mustard and lemon juice. The honey also gives the sauce a slight stickiness, which is perfect for coating chicken or dipping fries.
- Yellow and Dijon Mustard – Yellow mustard adds a classic mustard flavor and contributes to the familiar golden color of the sauce. Dijon brings depth and a slight spice to the sauce.
- Barbecue sauce – Provides a smoky, tangy sweetness, which is key to achieving that distinctive Chick-fil-A sauce flavor. You can use any barbecue sauce you prefer
- Lemon juice – Freshly squeezed lemon juice is ideal, but bottled works fine too.
- Paprika – Just a pinch adds warmth and a hint of color. If you want a bit of smokiness, you can use smoked paprika
Recipe Tips
- The type and flavor of barbecue sauce you use will change the flavor of the recipe. If you don’t like the results, try using a different barbecue sauce.
- Since mayo is the base of the sauce, using a high-quality brand will make a noticeable difference in taste and texture.
- For the best flavor, let the sauce rest in the fridge for at least 30 minutes before serving. This allows the flavors to meld together and gives the sauce its full, rich taste.
- This sauce isn’t just for dipping. It makes a great spread for burgers and sandwiches too.
How to Make Your Own Chick-fil-A Sauce at Home
Step 1
Gather Your Gear: Grab your trusty mixing bowl, measuring cups, spoons, and a whisk. Itโs time to channel your inner saucier!
Step 2
Mix It Up: In a medium bowl, toss in the mayo, honey, yellow mustard, Dijon mustard, barbecue sauce, lemon juice, and paprika. Whisk it like you mean it until everythingโs smooth and well combined. (Seriously, a few good whisks and youโre golden!)
Step 3
Taste Test: Go on, give it a taste. Need more tang? A tad sweeter? Adjust to your heart’s content. This is your masterpiece, after all.
Step 4
Chill Out: Pop your sauce in a covered container and let it hang out in the fridge. Itโll thicken up and the flavors will meld together, making it even more delicious. But if youโre impatient (no judgment), go ahead and dig in!
Step 5
Serve and Enjoy: This sauce is perfect for dunking nuggets, spreading on sandwiches, or even sneaking a spoonful straight from the jar (we wonโt tell).
Recipe FAQs
FAQs
What is Chick-fil-A Sauce?Hugh Fleming created this sauce in the early 1980s for his Chick-fil-A in Spotsylvania, Virginia. Now you can buy Chick-fil-A sauce at Kroger brand stores nationwide. Or, of course, make your own!
What kind of barbecue sauce should I use in this recipe?I use Sweet Baby Ray’s original barbecue sauce. It’s really up to you, but I recommend something that claims to have a “hickory smoked” flavor.
Can I use light mayonnaise or a mayo substitute?Yes, you can use light mayonnaise if you’re looking to cut calories, but keep in mind that it may affect the creaminess of the sauce. For a dairy-free option, try using vegan mayo or a mayo made from avocado oil for a similar texture.
How long will this sauce last in the fridge? The sauce will keep well in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 7 days. Just make sure to stir it before serving, as some separation may occur.

Tried several CFA sauce copycats and all stunk. This is right on the mark! I used half the yellow mustard and I think that was just right for us. Use Bone Sucking BBQ and Chosen avocado oil may. Just perfect! Will be drinking it until further noticeโฆ

What brand and flavor of bbq sauce was used – there are a million out there and if it is not the right one, it won’t be the same. TIA

Mine came out a bit sharper than cfaโs. I wonder what bbq sauce is best for this recipe? W suspect that may be the difference.
