DOUBLE CHOCOLATE MUFFINS (COSTCO COPYCAT RECIPE) — These decadent chocolate muffins, loaded with chocolate chips, taste just like the giant chocolate muffins from Costco!
You need to know, right off the bat, that I feel slightly guilty calling these muffins. If you’ve ever had Costco Double Chocolate Muffins, you know what I mean.
They aren’t fooling anybody. Because these so-called “muffins” are actually rich, moist, chocolate cupcakes….without frosting.
And of course, there’s the fact that they’re made with a chocolate cake mix. It’s a dead giveaway. But if we call them muffins, we can eat them for breakfast, and I’m good with that.
Whatever you choose to call them they are great for after-school snacks or breakfast on the go!
I like to use mini chocolate chips, but the regular size will work too. Either way, these are some of the tastiest chocolate “muffins” you’ll ever try!
Costco muffins are enormous, so I elected to make mine in a regular sized muffin tin. I will say–and my family agreed–that these do taste very much like the Costco variety.
I get about two dozen regular sized muffins from this recipe. If you use a Costco-sized muffin tin, you’ll get about a dozen muffins.
My youngest, who isn’t really a fan of chocolate or sweets, was pretty sure he wasn’t going to care for these muffins. But since trying them, he’s had one for breakfast every day since!
I, on the other hand, new I would love this Costco Copycat Double Chocolate Muffin recipe, and I was not disappointed. And if you just can’t finish off two dozen muffins, these freeze beautifully too!

Can’t wait to try these! I never buy the Costco muffins b/c they are so big (and I would eat it all). Your version looks DELICIOUS!
These muffins look fantastic! I just had a chocolate muffin for breakfast the other day and I told my friend I felt like I just had a piece of chocolate cake for breakfast! I may have to make these for this week!
Looks so good and delicious!!

Ah, those Costco “muffins” are totally my fave. This copy cat recipe sounds amazing!! And this way, I can make them in a reasonable sized pan as opposed to the massive ones Costco does. Pinned!
Yes–a Costo muffin in a manageable size. Can’t wait to try them!
I have made these twice in the last 2 weeks and they are amazing! This recipe makes 2 1/2 doz. They’re great for breakfast or a dessert. I heat mine up in the microwave for about 10 – 15 seconds & the choc. chips are so gooey – YUM! Thank you for this delicious recipe!
I just made these and they smell amazing! My daughter had one warm from the oven and thought they were delicious. I can’t handle the sugar in a full muffin so I made 12 muffins and 21 muffin tops. They all came out perfect!
Just decided not to make these after I bought all the ingredients…the majority of your comments are not about how the recipe turned out but people saying how good they look. I want to hear about the recipe. You should only post those
I just finished making these to accompany the poem “If you Give a Mom a Muffin” for our eighth graders to sell at their mother’s day bake sale and I have to confess… I had to try one to validate the incredible smell. So glad I did! They turned out terrific. I used Nestle mini chips as well as some full size dark chocolate chips. I filled the cups to the 3/4+ mark and they came out with a nice little dome on top after 18 minutes of bake time. The recipe made 25 muffins. Thanks for a recipe I am sure to make again (many times).
Haven’t made them yet Doesn’t tell me the calories
I’ve made these are they are amazing! Big hit with my adult kids too. I made some full sized muffins and some muffin tops. I’m sugar sensitive and even the muffin tops were too much for me. But, they are delicious!

Yum Danelle! These look so good, and I love knowing just what go into them instead of getting the Costco version. Pinned and stumbled 🙂
If the cake mix already has pudding in it, do we need to add more?
I always do, but it probably isn’t necessary.
Tried these last night for the 1st time and Oh My Goodness Gracious these are heaven!!! I couldn’t help but try the batter bc ya know I had to make sure they weren’t poisonous our anything 😉 and even the batter was a tasty treat!! Thank you so much for posting this recipe. My family devoured them. The recipe made 30 for me and the instant pudding and cinnamon ifs I think what put it over the top! 🙂
Hope you don’t mind but I am going to share your link on IG. 🙂
Great recipe! Just made them today. I used a cup of plain apple sauce instead of oil and eggs. I also used plain yogurt instead of sour cream. They were delicious and very chocolatey.
The top of my muffins went flat
Costco chocolate muffins don’t have cinnamon in them do they?
These are so yummy! I love that I can cook them in the size I want.
awful muffin—-great real and stop wasting people’s money.I trusted your site.

Works great as a chocolate cake mix muffin with chocolate pudding and chocolate chips. Does not work well as a strawberry cake mix muffin with strawberry pudding and white chips (and dried Valencia orange peel instead of cinnamon.) It comes out too cake-like as the strawberry variation. With the chocolate you can still pretend it’s not cake for some reason. (Side note, the chocolate not only freezes well, they taste great sliced straight from the freezer.)
Just have to say, I just made these. It’s 10.30pm on November 23rd 2022. They’re objectively great. I’m across the pond in the UK, so sourced our versions of the ingredients (i.e. Angel’s Delight for the instant chocolate pudding), and it still came out great. I think it’s the devil’s food cake mix.
I have to say though, it’s been a while since I tasted the costco chocolate muffin, so I may not remember its taste EXACTLY. But, this is a great chocolate muffin. So if you’re in doubt about that, don’t be.
Just made these for the first time…probably the best double chocolate muffin I’ve ever eaten. I was leery about using the cinnamon and almost left it out…glad I didnt! These muffins are delicious just as written! Thanks so much for posting this fabulous treat!!
