Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Generously grease a 9x5 loaf pan, or 3-4 mini loaf pans.
In a large bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt and spices. In a medium bowl, beat butter, sugar, eggs and vanilla with an electric mixer until well blended.
Alternate adding the flour mixture and the applesauce to the butter mixture, starting and ending with the flour mixture. Stir in half of the chocolate chips (if you use full size chocolate chips, you'll want to add a few extra).
Pour batter into prepared pans, filling about 2/3 full. Sprinkle remaining chocolate chips over batter. Bake in preheated oven for about 40-45 minutes for mini loaves, and about 60-75 minutes for a full size loaf.
Cool in pan on wire rack for 10-15 minutes before turning out onto wire rack to cool completely.
