Chewy Bakery-Style Sugar Cookies

These chewy, drop-style sugar cookies require no chilling, so they're quick and easy to make, and always a favorite. Rolling them in sanding sugar before baking give them a bit of sparkle and a crunchy texture that everyone loves.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup butter softened
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 3/4 cup sanding sugar

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cream of tartar and salt.
  • In a large bowl, beat together the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg yolks and vanilla and mix well.
  • Gradually add the flour, mixture mixing until just combined. Place the sanding sugar in a small bowl.
  • Roll dough into walnut sized balls, then roll the balls in the sanding sugar to coat. Place on prepared baking sheets, 2 inches apart.
  • Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are just golden. Do not overbake. Let cool on cookie sheet for 2-3 minutes before transferring cookies to a wire rack to cool completely.
