Sliced cucumbers and red onion in a creamy buttermilk dill dressing. The perfect salad for summer!
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
Cucumbers are probably my kid’s favorite vegetable, so I knew I couldn’t go wrong picking up a handful of cukes at the farmers’ market this week. And this Creamy Cucumber Dill Salad was the perfect way to use them.
This simple salad takes about five minutes to put together and the creamy dill dressing is the perfect accompaniment to fresh sliced cucumbers.
I love this salad! The buttermilk and dill makes it taste really good.

I like to use seedless cucumbers, but really, any type of cucumber will work. I try to refrigerate this salad for at least an hour before serving, but not more than 3 or 4 hours–it’s definitely best the day it’s made.
If you don’t have any buttermilk handy, just mix a tablespoon or so of vinegar into regular milk and let it sit for a few minutes. If you prefer a thicker dressing, us a little less buttermilk and/or a bit more mayonnaise.
When buying cucumbers, you want to avoid soft spots or blemishes. Be sure to choose a cucumber that best fits your plans–whether that’s pickling, slicing up for salads, or just eating raw.
Cucumbers will usually keep for about a week in a plastic bag in the refrigerator. And if they happen to be fresh from your garden, that’s even better!
If you happen to have fresh cherry tomatoes, half them and throw them in too for a Greek salad version of this recipe. One note: the dressing might separate a bit while the salad sits in the refrigerator. Just give everything a good stir before serving and you’ll be all set.
Like I said, my kids all love cucumbers, which means this is a favorite summer salad at your house. Hopefully you’ll love it as much as we do.

Thank you for the buttermilk idea. My ex husband was Russian, We ate our share of cucumber salad. His with tomato, mine without. But he was always bringing home buttermilk just to drink(i only knew to use it to soak chicken). We never thought to put it in cucumber salad itself. Now ‘Im nostalgic, and looking forward to trying something new.

This was delicious! My husband has been doing the grocery shopping during the quarantine and he came home with buttermilk by mistake! But I am so glad he did.
We loved the cucumber salad and I also made up the dressing to use on salads and it is fantastic. Thanks for a great recipe!
