Green Onion Cheese Ball

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

So many of our family’s holiday traditions center around food. I always make this cheeseball at Christmas time, and it’s one of the reasons I look forward to the holidays! I first tried it years ago when my friend, Leann, brought it to a holiday party. It was the best cheese ball I’d ever had, and when she shared the recipe, I couldn’t believe the short ingredient list.

  • Easy but elegant: Covered in almonds, it looks impressive on the table but takes just minutes to make.
  • Make it ahead: Chill it in advance and it’s ready to serve when guests arrive—stress-free entertaining at its best!
  • It’s a classic! Paired with crackers, chips, or veggie sticks, it’s a timeless recipe that always disappears quickly.

Recipe Tips

  • Soften the Cream Cheese Well: Let it sit at room temperature for 30–45 minutes before mixing.
  • Mix With Your Hands: I’ve found that the easiest (although not the neatest) way to mix this up is with my hands. I nice, sturdy wooden spoon will get the job done too.
  • Shape with Plastic Wrap: Place the mixture onto a piece of plastic wrap, then use the wrap to make a smooth ball.
  • Chill Before Serving: I like to refrigerate for at least 1–2 hours (or overnight) so the flavors blend and the cheeseball firms up nicely.
  • Finely Chop the Onions: They blend better into the cream cheese and keep the texture smooth.

Making Ahead and Storing

  • Make Ahead : This cheeseball can be prepared up to 2 days in advance. Wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and keep it refrigerated until you’re ready to serve. Hold off on rolling in the almonds until just before serving, that way they’ll retain some crunch.
  • Storage: Leftovers will keep in the fridge for 3–4 days. Just re-wrap tightly in plastic wrap or place in an airtight container.

Variations and Fun Twists

  • Bacon Lover’s: Mix in ½ cup of crumbled cooked bacon along with the green onions.
  • Cheddar & Chive: Stir in 1 cup of shredded sharp cheddar cheese and swap the green onions for fresh chopped chives.
  • Nut-Free: Roll in chopped fresh herbs like parsley or dill, or even crushed pretzels or crackers, instead of almonds.
  • Everything Bagel: Mix in a teaspoon or two of everything bagel seasoning and roll the ball in additional seasoning instead of the almonds.
