I love the flavors of orange and chocolate any time of year, but especially during the holiday season. And these Easy Chocolate Orange Truffles are one of my favorite candies to make during the holidays.

If you’ve never made chocolate truffles before, you’re not going to believe how easy it is. Plus, there are so many ways to change the flavors of your truffles, they’re destined to quickly become a holiday tradition.

To make these tasty chocolate morsels, all you need is chocolate (of course), heavy whipping cream and orange extract or orange oil. Plus some sugar for rolling the finished truffles in.

Yes, you can go all out and dip your truffles in chocolate, but I find that just compliments things, so I prefer to roll mine in sugar, cocoa or even chocolate sprinkles.

Easy Chocolate Orange Truffles

Want to change the flavor of your truffles? Just change the flavor of your oil or extract. Or use vanilla for a plain chocolate truffle.

Same goes for your chocolate–you can use milk, semi-sweet or dark, or even a combination, depending on your preference. I most often go with dark chocolate when making flavored truffles like orange or raspberry.

One important note: if you use extract, it’s not as concentrated, so you’ll need to use more (about a teaspoon). If you’re using oil (the kind of flavoring use in making hard candy) you’ll only need a 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon, because it’s much more potent.

These chocolate orange truffles are a holiday favorite at my house. And they’re perfect for holiday gift giving too.

Everyone is always impressed with homemade chocolate, and they never have to know how easy these truffles are to make.

Ingredients 

  • 1 10 oz. bag dark chocolate chips
  • 2/3 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 – 1/2 teaspoon orange oil or 1 teaspoon orange extract
  • Sugar or cocoa for rolling finished truffles in

Instructions

  • In a microwave proof bowl, melt chocolate at 50% power, stirring occasionally, until smooth.
  • Whisk in heavy cream and continue whisking until mixture is shiny and smooth. Stir in orange flavoring.
  • Cool mixture to room temperature, then refrigerate until firm but still pliable, like fudge. Shape into balls. (If mixture is to hard to roll into balls, let it stand at room temperature until you are able to roll it). Roll truffles in sugar or cocoa. Store in an airtight container at room temperature.

  • Can you use Basil extract in these? I had a basil cream center chocolate in Ashville and it was delicious. I havenโ€™t been able to find any recipes that had a cream center to make a substitution using the basil extract. Do you think it would work here?

    I saw you said they could be frozen but how would you defrost them? I would like to gift they to friends but I have finals so I would have to freeze them for a day or two before I hand them out

    I made these to accompany red wine at a wine tasting party. They were melt in your mouth delicious! The parties couldnโ€™t believe that I made them. Iโ€™m making them again & using coffee, raspberry and strawberry extract. Iโ€™m trying white chocolate ones with lime extract. Canโ€™t wait!!

    Instead of cooling in fridge and rolling could I pour it into silicone molds and then set in fridge?

  • Just wondering if I could use a Chocolate bar that has orange in it and omit the extract.

    Has anyone ever tried using orange emulsion in these, rather than oil or extract? The (natural) emulsion generally has a more true (not chemical) flavor, but I’m not sure if the chocolate would set up properly with it.

    Hey! Can you heat up the chocolate in a microwave? If so, then for how long? And, how long do you keep them in the fridge for? Just Wondering.

      Yes, the instructions suggest using a microwave. You can keep them in the fridge for at least a week.

  • The first time I made these they came out perfectly! The second and third time (now) it isn’t setting correctly. What can do when that happens?

    • Do you have access to Doterra oils? You could use their Wild Orange oil.

      I’m think it would work, but I’ve never tried it myself, so I’m not 100% sure about the measurements. I would start with a maybe 1/2 teaspoon and just give the mixture a taste and adjust as needed. The one thing I’m not super sure about is whether it would cause the chocolate mixture to seize up, but because of the cream, I think it should be fine.

  • Can you use milk chocolate? My husband was pissed that they had a bag of dark chocolate orange ones from Lindt but he hates dark chocolate!

  • Love the way these look and sound! Rolled in sugar and cocoa is very creative which gives them a unique appearance so they stand out. But then there is the combo of chocolate and orange!!!!
