Helpful tips for choosing avocados, plus simple storage solutions that will keep your produce fresh for as long as possible.
Unlike the rest of my family, I’m a huge fan of avocados. I love them in salads, on burgers and tacos, and as a garnish for tortilla soup. And obviously, I love a good slice of avocado toast.
Whether you use avocados for guacamole, or smoosh them onto toast, it’s important to know what to look for when purchasing avocados, and how to store them so they stay fresh longer.
What should I look for when choosing avocados?
Look for avocados that are dark, with a hint of green, and smooth, with no dents. Ripe avocados will be slightly soft, but not mushy.
Since avocados ripen best off the tree, most in supermarkets will still be very firm and not ready to eat. They’ll need several days at room temperature to ripen once you bring them home.
How should I store avocados?
Avocados should be stored on the counter until they are ripe. Once your avocados are ripe, you can put them (whole and uncut) in an airtight container and store them in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
