GERMAN CHOCOLATE FUDGE PIE — A rich, brownie-like pie filling is topped with a traditional German chocolate frosting in this decadent chocolate pie that’s loaded with pecans and coconut.

German Chocolate Fudge Pie

Oh my! Talk about decadent and delicious. If you love German chocolate cake, you are going to love this German Chocolate Fudge Pie.

This rich, fudge-like pie, is topped with classic homemade coconut pecan frosting, just like a German chocolate cake would be.

Made this pie yesterday, but with dark cocoa and unsweetened coconut. Delicious! Thanks for sharing your recipe. Itโ€™s better than any German Chocolate cake I ever had. I will definitely make it again for a special occasion. ~ Dana

The chocolate filling is loaded with semi-sweet chocolate chips and pecans, and tastes a lot like a dense, chewy brownie.

And the frosting! It was hard not to eat it all with a spoon. The recipe does make a generous amount of frosting though, so feel free to sample a few bites.

To summarize, this pie is rich, decadent, and over-the-top amazing. Perfect for any holiday, celebration, or special occasion.

German Chocolate Fudge Pie

Personally, I’ll take a pie over a cake any day, so I love this even more than German chocolate cake.

Feel free to use your favorite pie crust recipe, or if you prefer a shortcut, like me, a refrigerated pie crust works just as well.

My family honestly can’t tell the difference between store bought and home-made when it comes to pie crust, so I’d rather focus on creating a delicious filling.

This pie is AMAZING!!!! ~ Aurora

I prefer pecans, but you could also use walnuts in this recipe with great results. This pie is super rich and decadent, so I suggest starting out with a small slice. Going back for seconds is always an option!

If you have a chocolate and coconut lover in your life, I suggest you make them this German Chocolate Fudge Pie immediately! You’ll have a best friend for life.

Be sure to save this German Chocolate Fudge Pie recipe to your favorite Pinterest board for later.

  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup cocoa
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans
  • 1 14 oz. can sweetened condensed milk
  • 3 egg yolks lightly beaten

  • 3/4 cup chopped pecans

LOVEEEEEE this dessert! Super easy to follow instructions & it tastes amazing! I love the salty flaky crust with the rich brownie-like center and gooey topping! Literally one of the best desserts Iโ€™ve found on Pinterest and everyone Iโ€™ve made it for loves it too!

  • Could actual German Chocolate be used in this ??!!!

    • Sandra maulsin

Thatโ€™s exactly what m going to do when I make it, that way it will taste more like a true German choc pieโ€ฆ..

I don’t see why not–in place of the chocolate chips.

  • Delicious! The only problem I had was that the frosting never thickened. Any idea what I could have done wrong? I read that this happened to a few other people as well. Nonetheless it was still amazing! Thanks for sharing!

  • Can you use milk chocolate instesd ? I have half a bag leftover from another recipie.
    Thank you.,

Made this recipe. Since the frosting is made with eggs, albeit they are cooked, does the pie need to be refrigerated?

  • Can this pie be frozen?

  • Janelle G

How did your topping get so stiff and tall? Mine was more spreadable (yes I let it cool all the way) and it didnโ€™t get that tall layer on top

  • Susan Pecor

Do you have a slow cooker German Chocolate dump cake recipe?
    Thanks

  • Michele

Just pinned this on Pinterest and I had to visit your blog to tell how how gorgeous and delicious it looks!! ;-o I cannot wait to make this.

  • Well, I do hope this pie turns out good. I had to add a 1/4 cup of cream to get it to mix up smoothly. I love German Chocolate cake.

Made this pie yesterday, but with dark cocoa and unsweetened coconut. It was still rich, but not overly sweet. Delicious! Thanks for sharing your recipe. It’s better than any German Chocolate cake I ever had. I will definitely make it again for a special occasion.

  • This pie is AMAZING!!!!

  • It says to pour the mixture into a prepared crust, but the ingredients say unbaked pie crust. Should I bake the crust before filling?

Can you bake the German chocolate fudge pie a day before

    • Jennifer

I was thinking the same thing. Does prepared mean just ready in the pan or prebaked.

      Danelle

Prepared just means you have made your pie crust dough (or unrolled your store-bought dough) and put it into your pie pan, not that you have baked it.

  • This is perfection!! I’m not a cake fan so for years my mom made me the whole recipe of the German chocolatefrosting for Christmas, she would put it in a cute jar with a spoon attached!!

  • MegUnprocessed

    What a beautiful fudge pie!

  • Jessica

Would this work on a graham cracker pie crust?

    • A
      Danelle

I would say probably not. Normally graham cracker crusts are baked for 10 minutes at the most before putting in the pie filling–they aren’t typically used for baked pies, just chilled pies. Since this filling has to be baked for 30 minutes, I’m thinking that would be way too long for a graham cracker crust.

      • Definitely you could use a graham crust! Baked cheesecakes use graham cracker crusts all the time. As well as magic cookie bars.

  • Looks amazing! Does it need to be refrigerated after baking?

    • A
      Danelle

I think it tastes better at room temperature. I wouldn’t refrigerate unless you don’t eat it within a few days.
