Ingredient Notes & Easy Swaps
These sliders are super adaptable! Here’s a quick rundown on the ingredients and some easy ways to make them your own:
- King’s Hawaiian Rolls: Their soft, slightly sweet flavor pairs perfectly with the salty ham and melty cheese. You can also use any dinner rolls or party buns you like.
- Deli Ham: Thinly sliced ham heats quickly and layers easily. Honey ham adds extra sweetness, but you can also use smoked or black forest ham for a bolder flavor.
- Swiss Cheese: Classic with ham, but Gruyère, provolone, or sharp white cheddar work great too!
- Dijon Mustard: Balances the richness of the butter and cheese. For a milder option, use honey mustard instead.
- Butter: Helps the rolls get golden on top. Unsalted is best since the ham is already salty.
- Poppy Seeds & Dried Minced Onions: Add texture and flavor to the buttery topping. Optional, but they make these sliders extra special!

Recipe Tips
- Keep the rolls intact when slicing them in half. It makes layering easier and keeps everything tidy.
- Cover with foil while baking to keep the sandwiches soft and melty. For a slightly crispier top, remove the foil during the last 5 minutes of baking.
- Prep ahead: Assemble the sandwiches up to a day in advance. Just wait to pour the butter mixture on top until you’re ready to bake!
- Make them freezer-friendly: Assemble, wrap tightly, and freeze. Defrost in the fridge before baking.
- Want more flavor? Add a pinch of garlic powder to the butter mixture or an extra swipe of mustard inside the rolls.
Storage & Reheating Tips
- Refrigerator: Leftovers keep in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- Reheat: Warm them in the oven at 325°F until heated through (about 10-15 minutes).
- Freeze: Assemble and freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight, add the butter topping, and bake as usual.

Variations to Try
Feeling creative? Try one of these tasty twists:
- Turkey & Cranberry Sliders: Swap the ham for sliced turkey and add a thin layer of cranberry sauce.
- Roast Beef & Cheddar: Sub in deli roast beef and sharp cheddar, then brush with a garlic butter topping.
- Italian Sliders: Use salami, ham, and provolone, and brush with an herbed olive oil mixture.
