Summer has officially begun, and that means lots of in-season fruit this month — think raspberries, blueberries and blackberries — plus crisp, cool veggies like lettuce and cucumbers.
WHAT’S IN SEASON IN JUNE?
- Fruits: While you may still be able to find rhubarb this month, it’s time to welcome raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, and lesser known berries like boysenberries and loganberries.
- Vegetables: It’s still a great time of year for enjoying cool, crisp salads made with lettuce, kale or cabbage. Cucumbers come into season this month, and they are the perfect summer vegetable for refreshing drinks, sandwiches and salads.
Hello summer! While I don’t always enjoy the rising temperatures, I absolutely adore all that summer offers in terms of seasonal produce.
This is definitely the time of year to highlight all the berries in your cooking and baking. Whether you love strawberries, blackberries, raspberries or other summer berries, they will be at their peak for the next few months. I love making beautiful berry filled baked goods, and adding fresh berries to flavored water and other summer drinks.
I really love cucumber season too. It’s such a light, refreshing vegetable that’s perfect in a Greek salad, or as a filling for grilled gyros. And I’ll be making hearty, meal-worthy salads all month long. Because who wants to turn on the oven when it’s hot outside?
With summer in full swing, you’re sure to find plenty of tasty dishes in this collection that incorporate seasonal produce. Here are some of the most popular fruits and vegetables that are in season during the month of June.
WHY COOK WITH WHAT’S IN SEASON?
- Seasonal food is fresher and more nutritious than out-of-season food. Fruits and vegetables start losing nutrients the moment they’re picked, so the quicker food reaches the table, the more nutritious it will be.
- You’ll save money using in-season foods. Especially if you grow your own fruits and vegetables. And locally grown produce doesn’t have to travel far to reach you–those savings are passed on to you!
- You’re likely to try new ingredients, and a wider variety of fruits and vegetables, if you are focused on cooking and baking with what’s in season.
- You’ll rely less on global, industrial agriculture, which is better for the environment.
- Fresh, locally grown (if possible) in-season produce just tastes better! If you’re lucky enough to have year round farmer’s markets where you live, that’s the best place to find delicious seasonal produce. Plus it helps support the local economy and farmers.
