Basically, you take all the ingredients from your favorite Italian sub, dice them up, and serve them dip-style on baguette slices.

Trust me. It works! Although when I explained this to my oldest (smart-aleck) son, he said “Or, you could just not chop everything up, and put the slices of meat and cheese between two pieces of bread.”

Turns out, he loved it more than anyone! If you prefer, you could also serve this with chips or crackers, but I like to stick with some sort of bread, in keeping with the whole sandwich theme.

Hoagie dip with deli meat, cheese and lettuce.

You can make this a day ahead, as long as you wait until just before serving to add the lettuce. We love the hot banana peppers, but you can leave those out if you prefer.

Diced tomatoes are another nice addition, but a lot of people (especially kids) don’t like them, so I usually leave them out, or serve them on the side.

This Italian sandwich-inspired dip is perfect for game day, summer barbecues, neighborhood potlucks, movie night–really, any casual get-together or party with friends.

However and wherever you decide to serve this Italian Hoagie Dip, it sure to be a hit! I’ve already got it on my Memorial Day menu!

What should I serve with Italian Hoagie Dip?

This dip is good with crackers and potato chips, but we always serve it with sliced baguettes or other crusty bread. If you have time, you can even make your bread from scratch.

Here are some of our favorite bread recipes to make when we’re serving this delicious dip.

Ingredients for Italian Hoagie Dip

  • Pepperoni – use mini pepperoni to save time slicing
  • Genoa salami
  • Deli ham – honey ham, black forest, etc., any kind works
  • Provolone cheese – mozzarella is another great choice
  • Produce: red onion, lettuce – I prefer iceberg lettuce in this recipe
  • Banana peppers – or chopped roasted red peppers
  • Mayonnaise
  • Italian seasoning – or a combination of basil and oregano

Tips for making this recipe

  • You can mix this dip up ahead of time, but don’t stir in the lettuce until just before serving. No one likes soggy lettuce.
  • If you like tomatoes, chop a few and add them to the dip. Feel free to experiment with other veggies, meats and cheeses.
  • For the best flavor, let the dip chill in the fridge for about 30 minutes before serving. It gives the ingredients time to mingle and develop even more deliciousness.
  • If you like your dips with a bit of a kick, donโ€™t hesitate to add more hot banana peppers. Alternatively, you can mix in some diced jalapeรฑos or a dash of red pepper flakes. For those who prefer a milder dip, simply omit the peppers.

How to make Italian Hoagie Dip

Step 1

Prep the Ingredients: Start by gathering all your ingredients and equipment. On a clean cutting board, dice the pepperoni, Genoa salami, and deli ham into small, bite-sized pieces. Next, cut the Provolone cheese into small cubes. Finally, chop the red onion and, if you’re adding a bit of heat, finely chop those hot banana peppers.

Step 2

Mix It Up: In a large mixing bowl, combine the diced meats, cheese, red onion, and banana peppers. Now, it’s time to add the magicโ€”stir in the mayonnaise and Italian seasoning until everything is well-coated. This step is crucial for getting that creamy, savory goodness in every bite.

Step 3

Add Freshness: Just before you’re ready to serve, fold in the finely chopped lettuce. This adds a delightful crunch and freshness that balances out the rich flavors of the meats and cheese.

Step 4

Serve and Enjoy: Serve your Italian Hoagie Dip with slices of crusty baguette or your favorite crackers. Trust me, your guests will be coming back for seconds (and thirds)!

FAQ Section Icon

FAQs

Can I make this dip ahead of time?

Absolutely! You can prepare the dip a day in advanceโ€”just hold off on adding the lettuce until right before serving to keep it crisp. Store the prepared dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

How long will the dip last in the fridge?

The Italian Hoagie Dip will stay fresh for up to 2-3 days in the refrigerator. Keep it in an airtight container to maintain its flavor and texture. Remember, the lettuce might lose its crunch after the first day, so consider adding fresh lettuce when youโ€™re ready to enjoy leftovers.

Is there a low-fat version of this dip?

You can lighten up this dip by using low-fat or light mayonnaise. Additionally, you could substitute part of the mayonnaise with Greek yogurt for a tangier, lighter option without sacrificing creaminess.

What can I serve with this dip besides baguette slices or crackers?

This dip pairs well with a variety of dippers! Try serving it with crunchy vegetables like celery sticks, bell pepper slices, or even cucumber rounds. Breadsticks, pita chips, or toasted flatbread are also great alternatives.

What if I don't have Italian seasoning?

If you donโ€™t have Italian seasoning on hand, you can create a quick substitute by mixing dried oregano, basil, thyme, and a pinch of garlic powder. Adjust the proportions to your taste to replicate the flavor.

  • Lots of people asking what this was called and wanting the recipe. We had an Italian Christmas dinner and this was the favorite appetizer. We paired it with Alabama Firecrackers! Iโ€™d love know if anyone tries this combo. The AF recipe sounds a bit odd, but it was actually very good. We also had plain Ritz crackers for anyone who didnโ€™t like as much heat. (Though in my opinion it wasnโ€™t a heat that lingers.) Itโ€™s just as good with or without the lettuce. Iโ€™ll use this dip for years to come.

  • This is not a dip. Not dippable by any means of the word โ€œdipโ€. The name must change not sure what to maybe spread, or just call it antipasto but it actually offends me that someone thinks this is a dip. Like youโ€™re a liar.

  • Do you use just plain Italian seasoning or like the good season Italian dressing mix?

  • Marie E Grant

gonna try this one day but with bow pasta? or colorful spiral

  • Michelle

Great dip. Added pickles because what’s a hoagie without pickles!

  • Becky Campion

Can leftovers (cooking for two) be froze?

    • A
      Danelle

No, this will not freeze well. I’d just half the recipe.

  • This was delicious!! For anyone hating on the Mayo- seriously just try it. The combination of the Mayo with the juices from the banana peppers is perfection. Serve this with sliced baguette bread or chips!

I always double the batch for work and NEVER have left overs. Thanks for this simple delicious recipe!! Itโ€™s our fav!

  • Rachel Pufall

Made this yesterday and it is so GOOD!! Great with extra lettuce as a salad. Wonderful as a weekend prep all week long lunch option.

  • This is one of my favorite dips! Itโ€™s good as a dip or add more lettuce and eat as a salad. If youโ€™re not sureโ€ฆtry it, you wonโ€™t be disappointed.! BTW this is the first comment Iโ€™ve left on a recipeโ€ฆ.that should say something!

    Hi
I love the dip recipe itโ€™s addictive and delicious but itโ€™s messy snd hard to eat on sliced sliced baguettes. itโ€™s hard to scoop it itโ€™s hard to keep it on the bread and then if you take a bite everything falls off
I need ideas for other vessels into my mouth
    lol
I guess I could always try scoops chips
    seems like a good combo
    But i loved it

This is my second review as I have a batch sitting in the fridge for our next door neighbor Superbowl get together. I first reviewed two years ago – and this is the most requested dip from my neighbors. We also play cards every weekend with them and have dinner together. My neighbor will often say “hey – why don’t you just make that hoagie dip for game night?”

I knew I had to bring it over for today’s game (and I have to double the recipe so I can leave some leftovers with them).

I just leave out the lettuce now, we don’t feel it really needs it – and we load it up with the mild pepper rings, which I intentionally let juices drip in too – for extra flavor. If it wasn’t for his picky wife, I’d throw in some black olives too! LOL

  • Loved it! Easy to eat, and fresh and delicious! I also enjoy the prep for this. Thank you.

  • Hi Danelle,
Can you tell me approximately the size of 1 serving?

    Thanks

  • Harmony

Excellent recipe. I made it 3 times last week. For the Italian seasoning I used one package of Good Seasons dry mix. Thank you for the recipe!

    Danelle

I would guess most of it is from the mayo. It seems like almost all packaged/processed foods have sugar, even when it doesn’t seem like they should.

  • Melanie

Could you tell me where the sugar count comes from. It says 6gm. I know that onions have sugar. Is there some other item?

  • Danelle, it looks perfect and tasty! Canโ€™t wait to have this anytime of the day, love it!

  • Robin Abernethy

I made this for Superbowl and at first, people were skeptical until they tried it, and then it got destroyed! Everyone there does low carb and keto, so we served with tortilla chips made from low carb wraps. Good thing I made two batches so that everyone also got to take some home (happily). It was the hot of the party! I used pickled pepper rings (not hot) and used pre shredded lettuce for tacos. This will be my go to for potlucks and other parties!

    • Donna Hoster

You could also serve on pickle slices or cucumbers for keto.

    • A
      Danelle

That’s what happens when I make it…..people think, “this seems weird,” and then no one can stop eating it! So glad it went over well!

  • Anthony

I made this for our New Year’s party and everyone loved it!! I omitted the lettuce just because I didn’t have time to shred. No one noticed and several people asked for the recipe.

  • Anyone know or try to come up with the macros for a serving? I made this yesterday and love it. We are Keto and track macros. ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Maribeth

How thick should the meats and cheese be sliced?

    • A
      Danelle

I used pre-sliced deli meats, like for sandwiches, so they were sliced quite thin.

  • Great recipe. Made a few substitutions with the lunch meat. Got creative since we don’t eat pork. I substituted Turkey products. Turkey Salami, peppered Turkey and Turkey ham. It was Awesome!

  • Lynette

Can this be made the night before a party?

    • A
      Danelle

You could chop everything up the night before, but I wouldn’t mix it up until you’re going to serve it or the dressing will make the lettuce soggy.

  • Mafiosarose

This is a great dip a friend brought some and I love it . .

  • Steve Crawford

Is it possible to substitute something for the mayo? Greek yogurt or something… Thanks

  • This is so colorful and it looks really pretty. I can’t wait to try it. Thanks for sharing the recipe.

  • I made this, for football game party. This is incredible, it s a keeper

  • This looks great! Have you ever tried it with Italian dressing instead of mayonaise?

  • Could you add olives

  • this was amazing, it turned out even better then I imagined. Everyone who had it went crazy for it and I even heard a “this is the best appetizer I have ever had”. Thanks so much for sharing we will be enjoying this over and over for many years! Served with toasted French bread.

Thank Amy! I think when you tell people about it, they think it sounds weird, and they try it and everyone LOVES it! So glad to hear it was a hit for you too! ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Brasserie Louis

Looks like a very tasty and delicious sandwich !! It is so easy to prepare and consumes less time as well. Thanks Danelle for sharing this lovely recipe ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Catherine

Sounds like a wonderful recipe for the beautiful weather to come to enjoy with a picnic.

  • Sounds so nice. Thank you

    • This is a great dip… Made for Thanksgiving and didnโ€™t last very long.

    • Italian hoagies are not made with Mayo. I found it best to add Olive oil and some spicy Hoagie Spread. Mayo ruins the flavor.

      • Donna Hoster

        Wrong.

      • That’s your opinion. There is no right or wrong way. The recipe is great as is! Italian hoagie are made the way the person wants them.

      • My Italian hoagie always has Mayo! Yum!

      • Haha. You must have never had a hoagie dip!!

      • Kimberly

Agreed. I thought the same thing. What did you use that works?
