Why You’ll Love This Recipe
If you’re looking for a unique and flavorful condiment to serve with all of your Mexican-inspired dishes, then I highly recommend this amazing Avocado Serrano Cream Sauce. Think of this sauce as an extra smooth and creamy guacamole with a bit of heat from the serrano pepper. You can, of course, customize the heat level by adding more or less chili pepper than the recipe calls for.
My husband, who dislikes guacamole, loves putting this sauce on everything. So this really is a condiment that everyone can agree on!
- Use it as a dip for tortilla chips and fresh veggies, or even as a salad dressing!
- Use it to top tacos, enchiladas, burritos–all your favorite Mexican-inspired dishes.
- It’s a great way to use up avocados that are almost past their prime.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions
Serrano Substitutions
Serrano peppers are pretty mild, but they still bring a nice kick of heat to this sauce. If you prefer something even milder, be sure to remove all of the seeds. Anaheim peppers are a good substitute, with about the same heat level. For more heat, swap in something spicier, like a jalapeno, or add a pinch of cayenne pepper.
Dairy Free Alternatives
Coconut yogurt or cashew cream can be used in place of the Greek yogurt in this recipe. And any kind of milk works, so feel free to use almond, oat, or coconut milk. Start with less and add as needed.
No Cilantro Please!
Not a fan of cilantro? No problem! You can leave it out, or swap in some fresh parsley to brighten things up.

Recipe Tips
- Sauce is too thick: If you want to use this sauce as a dip, thicker is better. But if you’re planning to drizzle it on tacos or other Tex-Mex fair, you may need to thin it out with some additional milk or lime juice.
- Sauce is too thin: If your sauce is too thick, blend in another half of an avocado or an additional spoonful of Greek yogurt to help thicken it up.
- Sauce is too spicy: If your sauce has a little too much heat, try adding more avocado or Greek yogurt to mellow it out. A small squeeze of honey or extra lime juice can also help balance the spice.

Variations & Fun Twists
- Herby Avocado Cream Sauce: Swap or mix the cilantro with basil, parsley, or chives for a different, fresh flavor. This version is perfect for pairing with roasted veggies, grilled chicken or fish.
- Roasted Garlic & Avocado Sauce: For a deeper garlic flavor, roast the garlic cloves before blending. This adds a rich, slightly sweet depth that pairs beautifully with grilled meats and roasted potatoes.
- Avocado Serrano Ranch Sauce: Mix in a teaspoon of ranch seasoning for a zesty ranch-inspired version. This one is great for dipping fries or drizzling over salads!
- Avocado Pineapple Cream Sauce: For a tropical twist, blend in ¼ cup of canned, drained crushed pineapple. The sweetness balances the heat and makes this sauce amazing for fish tacos!
